At The Green Mission Inc. it is our privilege to work with deconstruction contractors, nonprofits, and clients making the environmentally responsible choice to deconstruct and donate rather than demolish and dump. Today we are highlighting a company in the Upper Midwest dedicated to innovative strategies for maximum salvage, reuse, and recycling, Recyclean Inc.

Founded by Mike Goffman, with over twenty years of experience in the deconstruction industry, Recyclean ensures constant expansion and innovation in their ability to move materials away from the landfill and towards reuse and recycling. Mike’s vision is to “educate the world about thinking past the dumpster. As Mike says,

"You have to be a little crazy to do what we do. We don't look at old buildings as waste, but as opportunities for the future!"

Mike's constantly pushes towards higher percentages of recycling and reuse. He guides his team towards new technologies for recycling materials like concrete and drywall that are some of the guiltiest culprits in landfill dumping.

As independent appraisers, we value the materials and property salvaged by Recyclean and donated by our clients. Whether they are deconstructing a Wisconsin barn with old-growth lumber, or a contemporary home in Chicago, the team at Recylean ensures the maximum salvage rate per project. Our team often values kitchen cabinetry, bathroom fixtures, appliances, lumber, windows, furnishings, doors, lighting, and a multitude of other salvaged property.

Additionally, Recyclean does not stop when reuse is impossible; they turn to recycling. Roofing, shingles, plastics, insulation, electronic devices, concrete, and masonry are just a few of the materials recycled and removed from the waste stream. From Partner Joshua White,

"We have a phenomenal team. We're running anywhere from five to seven different crews," White said. "Those crews have the ability to merge and separate as needed depending on what type of projects we have. Each of those crews has a crew lead, and those crew leads have been with us for a long time and are very educated in our standard operating procedures from both a safety and an operational execution standpoint. By doing that and really continuing to improve our model, our landfill diversion rate continues to improve, and as we get larger our economies of scale improve."

Deconstruction can cost more than demolition due to the labor-intensive processes in carefully “un-building” rather than a quick tear-down demolition. However, tax deductions are available to individuals, pass-through entities, and corporations when they donate the materials and properties to a 501(c)(3) or a governmental entity.

Recyclean Partner Mike Laidley can make site visits to determine the scope of the project. Mike ensures clients stay updated throughout the entire process and is a favorite with our clients.

Additionally, Recyclean Inc is excited to present the world's first recycling app for deconstruction and green demolition. The creation of this proprietary app will help green demolition and deconstruction organizations manage the recycling of building materials, making a huge impact on their bottom line and the environment.

As independent appraisers, we provide an estimated value range to clients within 24-48 hours to assist the client in determining the value of the tax deduction. Our valuations are based upon researching market-based sales and price-points to ensure accuracy and IRS compliance.

The client can then consult with their tax professional to ensure the deduction makes sense for them. Please visit our website for numerous articles on the tax deduction details.

Here is an example by the numbers:

Donation of $100,000 of materials

Combined federal and state tax rate of 25%

Tax deduction of $25,000 taken on the Schedule A Itemized Deductions up to 50% of Adjusted Gross Income with a 5-year carry-forward.
